To kick off 2026, we’re sharing our top Chicago apartment winter tips to help you stay cozy and enjoy the best of our city—even when the wind is whipping off the lake.
1. Master Your Vintage Microclimate (Especially in Older Chicago Buildings)
Many Beal properties feature beautiful vintage architecture. These buildings are built to last, but they “breathe” differently than new construction.
- The Radiator Trick: To get the most out of your steam heat, keep a small clearance between your radiator and your furniture. This allows the warm air to circulate freely throughout the room as intended.
- Extra Cozy Layers: Our team works hard to ensure windows and doors are properly sealed. However, when that famous Chicago wind kicks up, adding a stylish draft dodger to a window sill or entry door is a great way to add an extra layer of insulation and keep your sanctuary perfectly snug.
- Humidity Is Your Friend: Winter air is naturally dry. Using a humidifier doesn’t just help you sleep better; it actually helps the ambient air retain heat more effectively, keeping your Chicago apartment comfortable while remaining energy-efficient.
2. Be Proactive, Stay Protected
Chicago winters can be unpredictable. A few small steps today can prevent a headache tomorrow:
- Cabinet Doors: If your kitchen sink is on an outside wall, keep the cabinet doors open overnight during extreme lows to let your apartment’s warmth reach the plumbing.
- Heading Out? If you’re heading out of town this winter, please never turn your heat completely off. Keep it set to a minimum of 60°F to help ensure your home stays safe while you’re away.

- For the Best Soup: Lucia’s Deli (Bucktown/Wicker Park). Ask anyone at the Beal office and they’ll tell you: the Pasta Fagioli at Lucia’s is the best thing ever. It’s a neighborhood staple and the perfect soul-warming meal for a cold January afternoon.
- For a Quick Warm-Up: Intelligentsia Coffee (Lakeview/Old Town). A Chicago original, their Broadway and Old Town locations offer the perfect atmosphere to warm up with a world-class latte while watching the snow fall outside.
